You need to be safe, and a first aid kit is one of the most important items for any family, organization or business to have. It costs little (especially when compared to the value of the lives it can help save). And it is easily stored.
One of the first things to consider when choosing a first aid kit is the size. In general, a first aid kit is available in one of the following size categories: 1-10 person, 10-20 person, 20-50 person, 50-100 person, and 100 person and up.
A 1-10 person first aid kit is generally all you'll need for your home, car, camping gear, motor home or boat. It contains most of the basics of first aid; painkillers, ointments, bandages, gauze pads, etc. A 1-10 person first aid kit is great for parents or anyone preparing to take a trip.
A 10-20 person first aid kit is the right size for most small offices, day care facilities or restaurants. Again, it contains most of the basics, but because you're more likely to use it in a work environment, you'll probably want to make sure it contains eyewash, a CPR apparatus and easy-to-follow instructions.
For medium-sized businesses and civic or private organizations, a 20-50 person first aid kit is more appropriate. Large businesses, warehouses, airports, schools, and the like should invest in a 50-100 person first aid kit or 100 person and up first aid kit. Again, depending on your industry, you may need to include more specialized and advanced products like instant cold compresses, sting-free antiseptic wipes, trauma pads, burn relief and sterile eye pads.
No matter what size first aid kit you choose, make sure it contains easy-to-follow instructions. If it is for commercial use, be sure it meets or exceeds existing OSHA standards. And remember, no first aid kit is meant to be a substitute for seeking professional medical care.
